Steve returned from his trip to Sicily and brought home some exquisite treats. Usually he
flys back with
cannoli, these tube shaped fried dough shells filled with ricotta or
mascarpone (Italian cream cheese). To-die-happily-for to say the least. This time he brought back these
Mandorla cookies...variations on an almond or pistachio theme. They were, and I mean WERE,
buonissimo, as we wolfed them down.
And if that wasn't enough heaven he also brought a
sette veli (seven veils).
It is seven layers of chocolate cake and mousse, hazelnut and a crispy layer all smothered in chocolate. I now understand how food can be sensual. Centuries ago the Pope told Italians enough of their immoral ways at
Carnivale, and they were supposed to pour that energy into food. They succeeded with this cake! It's beyond words it's
soooooo incredible! I think Steve paid nearly $50 at Cappello pasticceria (a pastry shop named "Hat". It's too bad all the calories don't just go to your head and not your torso) It was worth every penny. Chocolate cheesecake just got toppled as king of the mountain for me.

Steve also came home with this impressive
Carabinieri hat. The
Carabinieri are the most respected police agency here in Italy-- known for their honesty and integrity. They are posted in every small village around
bella Italia and defend their embassies worldwide. Because they are a para-military they even go with the troops to fight (Afghanistan and Iraq, and are currently being sent to Gaza). These snazzy caps worn by the higher officers are eye catching. So of course everyone had to try it on.

The National Police seized this
carabinieri hat from the house of a mafia fugitive that they arrested. They gave Capo Steve this
cappello (hat) in a show of gratitude for his continued help and support. This is one of those cases where it's
ok that it "goes to your head."
