This weekend we found the most amazing park with sections of ancient aquaducts still intact (most of the aquaducts were destroyed in the 6th century due to barbarian invasions). Standing underneath the mammoth creations, we couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity of the Roman civil engineers, and the beautiful arches they incorporated, to maintain a constant gradient, to bring water 50 miles into Rome. This aquaduct is called Aqua Claudia as it was started in 38ad & was finished in 52ad under the Claudian Empire.
There are many "modern" aquaducts in Rome (built in 1500's by different Popes) that currently feed the fountains of Rome, and which we regularly fill our water bottles when we go on walks.
